One of the most significant contributors to wildfire intensity, and the only controllable factor, is the buildup of fuel loads, which are more present in dense, old-growth forests. Yet when Albertans see foresters removing older trees, it’s often mistaken for deforestation. In reality, this work reduces fuel loads, creates firebreaks, and helps regenerate healthier, more resilient forests.
